About the Author
As a child, Emilie filled her spare time reading and writing imaginative stories. She grew up immersed in creative expression—drawing, dancing, acting, singing, and writing which led her to study Theater Arts and Creative
Writing at Fordham University.
Always drawn to intense characters and music, she studied opera at the Manhattan School of Music. Afterward, she received her master’s in Music Education from Columbia University. She’s a married mom of two, living in New York, and when she’s not plotting novels, she plans music lessons and concerts for her elementary students.
Cuts of the Heart
France, 1917. Dr. Elise Henri-Martin, an infectious disease specialist, has been transferred—again—away from the front, bringing cutting-edge, much-needed supplies to the countryside’s largest field hospital. Mistakenly drafted, she must earn Dr. Georges Pavard’s trust, hoping her success will aid a custody suit for her son.
Pavard, a staunch supporter of ‘tried-and-true’ works best, has returned from ten years in Senegal, having fled France in Professional embarrassment, with no patience for women in medicine. However, when their commanding officer decides their odd medical partnership is exactly the boost in morale France needs, they must work together—innovating the use of x-rays and surgery to treat advanced tuberculosis.
The two find solace in each other until a demonstration of the procedure brings their bond to the breaking point. With Elise’s divorce exposed and her career and custody suit threatened, Pavard must choose to face the horrific surgical failure that forced him to flee France in order to follow his heart.
